It may be difficult to tell, but this is a painting of a pocket watch in a bed of dead rose petals (I'm the painter, so it looks recognizable to me). Personally, I think it's a good still life. I'm not crazy about it, but I'm proud that I finished this in an hour.
I tried putting a lighter-colored backdrop behind the set-up, but it irked me. I always (almost without fail) go for darker backdrops...it makes whatever I'm painting (like a pocket watch) stand out all the more. And I generally prefer darker colors anyway..they're poignant and rich.
I love painting metal in a still life. (ex.) Especially brass or gold. It reflects so much light and color!
